South Main Street Bridge Emergency Closure and Repair Update April 10, 2026

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is actively responding to the emergency closure of South Main Street Bridge in Phillipsburg, with public safety as its top priority.

Transportation Commissioner Priya Jain conducted an on-site inspection yesterday to assess conditions following the bridge’s closure on Wednesday, April 8. The issue was identified as part of a routine inspection, and further analysis is underway to determine both short-term and long-term repair solutions.

NJDOT’s contractor is currently mobilized on site, and pedestrian access was safely restored at approximately 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.

NJDOT leadership has initiated an accelerated repair planning process in coordination with structural inspection and design consultants to address conditions on the 116-year-old bridge and restore full access as quickly as possible.

Detours remain in effect and are being actively managed in coordination with Phillipsburg Police and Fire Departments to maintain regional traffic flow. NJDOT continues to work closely with local and county officials and will provide ongoing updates as repair efforts progress.

NJDOT’s absolute priority is ensuring the safety of the public and reopening this critical infrastructure safely and efficiently.

The Town of Phillipsburg is working closely with the New Jersey Department of Transportation and local emergency services to support traffic management and ensure public safety during this closure. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as repairs move forward and will continue to share updates as they become available.
